National Championship Race, Week 1

CORRECTION: We do have a flat out leader in the race: 2-0 Hawaii. Article updated.

I've developed a method to determine which four teams deserve to be selected for the College Football Playoff. I'm also curious to see how my standings compare the the Selection Committee's, who won't release their first ranking until mid-October.

It's too early to rank teams according to my secret method.  But in alphabetical order, here are the teams tied for for second behind Hawaii in the race to a National Championship playoff spot. There are many more that are right behind, them so many that it's not worth listing today. This will shake itself out as more games are played.

LEADER: Hawaii
Tied for 2nd:

Alabama

Arizona St
Boise St
Duke
Fresno St
Houston
Iowa
LSU
North Texas
Ohio St
Oklahoma
Rutgers
Southern Cal
Stanford
UCF
Vanderbilt
Virginia Tech
Washington St
Wisconsin

It is true that eyeball tests and "impressive" victories over teams we think are good would lead us to conclude that some of these teams are much better than others. But they'll have to prove it over more games. I won't rank teams until some come out ahead of other in my system. Stay tuned.
