NFL MVP Chase: Lamar Jackson catches up

He's been in the national MVP conversation for several weeks, and now he's provided the evidence for me. Lamar Jackson is now tied for the lead for the MVP in my book.

Because his Ravens started 2-2, Jackson had ground to make up against players from teams with better records, because his team has to win the game before I evaluate whether the player personally had a game performance to add to his MVP resume.

That's because "most valuable" should be related to victory, which is the commodity sought after by NFL teams. Playing well in losses may help a player break records or earn accollades like the Pro Bowl and, ultimately, the Hall of Fame, but the MVP should be linked to winning.

To review: A player earns an MVP point if:
  • His team wins the game
  • He personally had a good game in those victories. It doesn't have to be a "great" game; for a quarterback it's a passer rating of 97.0 or higher, for backs and receivers it's 85 yards from scrimmage.
Here are the top contenders. Ties are listed alphabetically.

T1. Lamar Jackson, QB, Ravens, 9-2, 8 MVP points
T1. Kirk Cousins, QB, Vikings, 8-3, 8
T1. Michael Thomas, WR, Saints, 9-2, 8
T4. Chris Carson, RB, Seahawks, 8-2, 7
